PMBOK®5 Guide Processes



A Guide to the Project Management Body of Knowledge (PMBOK® Guide) - Fifth Edition describes the ground rules of project management and suggests a set of processes as well as tools and techniques for their accomplishment.
The output of a certain process usually becomes an input to other process(es). While some processes can occur in a chronological order it must be noted that many processes can happen at different times and in any sequence depending on the nature of the project and other aspects.

The 47 common Project Management Processes are grouped in 5 Process Groups

  • Initiating Process Group,
  • Planning Process Group,
  • Executing Process Group,
  • Monitoring and Controlling Process Group,
  • Closing Process Group.

The Processes are further grouped into Knowledge Areas

  • Project Integration Management,
  • Project Scope Management,
  • Project Time Management,
  • Project Cost Management,
  • Project Quality Management,
  • Project Human Resource Management,
  • Project Communication Management,
  • Project Risk Management,
  • Project Procurement Management,
  • Project Stakeholder Management,

In the Construction Industry following additional Knowledge Areas are common

  • Project Safety Management,
  • Project Environmental Management,
  • Project Financial Management,
  • Project Claim Management.

PMBOK5® Process Matrix

The 47 project management processes are grouped in 5 process groups and 10 knowledge areas. In the construction industry additional common processes are arranged 4 extra knowledge areas.
The matrix is meant to serve as an overview and is intended to be printed (plotted) in A0 size.
